How Do I bind.....?

Binding keys and using console commands

• Find the shortcut you use to start Hal-Life and right click on it, select "properties". In the "target" box you should see something like "c:\sierra\halflife\hl.exe" change it so it reads "c:\sierra\halflife\hl.exe -console". This will stop the Valve plugs from playing and allow you to access the console during the game play by using the tilde "~" key, the key left of the "1" button. (Don't go there,  Style.)
• Once you have the game up and running and you are actually playing, hit the ~ key and the console should pop down covering the top half of the screen. Don't do this in a fire fight or you shall surely die.
• Now, you can type commands in the console which take effect immediately and will stay saved after you shut down and restart the next time :) One small note, each mod that you play, will have it's own folder and config file. So your binds will only affect the mod you are currently playing. 
• At the command prompt, type your bind and hit enter. For example: 
  ]bind q +hook        <hit enter key>
  then hit the ~ key again to raise the console and resume playing the game.
  This bind will allow you to use the grappling hook in the oz and gathering mods by holding down the "q" key. You can use any key you can reach comfortably, just don't over-write a key that you normally use to play, such as "w" for forward movement. Doh!!
  

Problems with.....

When I select OpenGL mode and try to play the game I get an error stating that
 my card does not support that mode. It was working before.....

• Go to the downloads page and download the OpenGL fix file

I have a VooDoo4 or 5 card and the Screen freezes when I take a screenshot
But I can still hear the game going on in the background.....

• Go to the downloads page and download the Voodoo 4 or 5 OpenGL fix file. You might want to try this if you have an earlier Voodoo card anyway. This is the "Wicked GL" driver that some people believe has improved performance considerably.

When I  try to play the game I get an error stating that
 "You cannot connect to a server running custom game oz until you install the custom game"

Any of you who have upgraded to the new HL patch but are no longer able to get into a game because you get a warning saying:
"You cannot connect to a server running custom game oz until you install the custom game"

here is the fix:

Client Patch for HL (300 KB)     Mirror 

If you have the dedicated server package installed, you probably won't get this error.
