What do I need to play Oz?

The single most important thing you need to play
Oz Deathmatch is patience

Oz is reputedly the oldest mod for Half-Life. You will be playing against
opponents that have literally been playing this game for years.  They
will baffle you with strange abilities and miraculous feats, You will
initially be convinced that they are cheating somehow. No two Oz
servers will be quite alike. The Speed, weapons and damage can
be radically different.  But one thing is for certain...
If you become skilled at playing Oz, you will be able to
take on the best in any other first person shooter.

Binds:

You really should take the time to set up binds to the following functions:
See also: The FAQ's

Function: Console bind: Description:
Grapple
bind <key> +hook  Point your crosshairs where you want to grapple (fly) to, and hold the chosen key. You will be pulled to that location until you release the key.
Drop Rune
bind <key> droprune When you see a rune (spinning circle with a "Z" in the center) You can pick it up by running through it. Then you are granted it's unique powers. You cannot get another until you either die or drop your current rune using this command.
Rune Status
bind <key> runestatus When you hit the chosen key, the description of the rune you currently posses will be displayed on the lower left of your screen.
Use Rune
bind <key> userune When you have the teleport rune, this command will teleport you to another location. If you have the booby-trap rune, you will self-destruct and take out other players within a given radius.

Performance Tweaks

Okay, let's face it. We are never satisfied with our computer's performance. We want to squeeze every extra CPU cycle out of our machines in hopes that that last bullet reaches our target before theirs reaches us. Or be able to see that freakin' camper in the shadow under the stairs. I hope to assist you in that quest as best I can. Here are some tips and links to help you on your way.

Step One: See your Own Crosshairs

This is an absolute must! Those stock Valve crosshairs were obviously designed by the Marquis de Sade himself. If you don't have crosshairs that your eyes can follow under all light conditions, how are you ever gonna be able to track those heads? So here are links to sites that offer good crosshair replacements. Bullseye Crosshairs and Crosshair Central

Step Two: Get The Latest Drivers

Probably one of the first questions someone will ask you when you complain about crappy performance is, "Do you have the latest drivers?". Find out what kind of Audio, Video, and Modem ( gulp ) cards you have, then go to the manufacturers site and download the latest drivers you can find. This can not only improve performance, but solve alot of weird other problems.

Step Three: Tweak your Hardware settings

  • In the Windows display properties, fish around and see if the advanced properties include a separate gamma setting for OPENGL. If so, turn it up! If it's on say a default of 1, set it for 2. And in the Half-life video modes, make sure you are using the OpenGL mode, at least 800x600 if your card can support it. You will then be able to see into those dark places when everyone else is whining "This map is too dark".

  • If you are unfortunate enough to be using a modem, in the advanced properties for the modem find the Advanced Connection Properties and UN-check "compress data". This may not help your web surfing, but it will reduce the cyclic lag spiking that occurs when trying to play online games. Online gaming relies on a steady un-compressed data stream, not pulses of data like surfing. Also, check your connection speed at dialup. You might want to disconnect and reconnect till you get the best connection to your ISP.

Step Four: Get an Autoexec.cfg File

The more extra stuff your hardware has to do to while playing, the more you will lag. Plain and simple. The simplest way to turn off unnecessary visual extras and get better performance is to insert an autoexec.cfg file into all your game mod directories. I.E. "valve", "oz", "tfc" etc. Here is a link to a site that will walk you through a set of questions and create an autoexec file custom tailored to what you want: Tweak3D.net

Step Five: Make it Stop !!

Before you go online and play, turn all that Windows crap off !! Hit ctrl-alt-del and all you should see before you play or dial-up to your ISP is Explorer and Systray. You may need a specialized mouse or joystick accessory, but try killing all the programs you can before playing. A popular game killer would be ICQ or worse yet....Napster ! Nothing worse than trying to fire a satchel at that precise moment that "Scoobeyman243" decides to download "Thanks For The Memories" from your hard drive. GRRRRRR.
